Damon Self-Ligating Orthodontics

Unlike uncomfortable and bulky traditional orthodontic treatments, Damon braces will help you achieve a dazzling, straight smile in a much more comfortable, faster, and efficient way.

At our dental clinic in Zaragoza, we have extensive experience with the Damon self-ligating system. We have achieved exceptional results with patients diagnosed as “untreatable” by other professionals. And all of this without extracting healthy teeth.

What are self-ligating braces?

One of the key advantages of this type of treatment is its speed. In our article on the types of orthodontic treatment in Zaragoza, we discussed at length the main differences between all the available treatments.

Therefore, for patients who prioritize quick results above all other factors, self-ligating braces may be their best option.

Self-ligating orthodontics is one of the most effective orthodontic treatments. It offers significant advantages; its goal, like that of other orthodontic treatments, is to correct malocclusion and misalignment of the teeth, whether they are too close together, too far apart, or even crooked.

The ultimate goal is to move them into a functional and aesthetically pleasing position.

This treatment achieves tooth movement or displacement through pressure exerted by arch-wires and transmitted to the teeth via the brackets. This fixed orthodontic system, for the reasons we will discuss below, presents itself as an excellent alternative to traditional or conventional braces.

Self-ligating orthodontics can be used for both children over the age of 10 and adults.

Self-Ligating Orthodontics vs. Traditional Orthodontics

The difference is that traditional braces use plastic ligatures or elastics—which can be either clear or colored—whose function is to secure the archwire to the brackets. In contrast, the self-ligating system eliminates the need for these elastics and replaces them with a clip or cap, which presses the wire or archwire into the slot and holds it in place.

It is worth noting that, although traditional orthodontics achieves proper tooth alignment and is 100% functional, certain issues always arise. For example, the elastics or ligatures lose their tension quickly. This is why they need to be replaced monthly. They can even change color, significantly affecting aesthetics.

In addition, these elastics generate more force and cause greater friction, as there is more friction between the wire and the bracket. This produces the familiar sensation of pressure in the patient.

The elastics can even break and come off the arch-wire, which we can avoid by using self-ligating brackets.

Benefits of Damon Self-Ligating Orthodontics

In addition to the replacement of the rubber bands, this type of orthodontic treatment offers other features that make it a smarter choice. Not only does it provide greater comfort for the patient while delivering the same results, but it also offers the following advantages:

  • Fewer visits to the dentist. This is because the metal clip mechanism that holds the wire in place allows it to work effectively for longer and eliminates the need for replacements, unlike rubber bands. Adjustments can be made every 2 to 2.5 months.
  • Appointments are shorter. Checkups are simpler, and if treatment is needed, it’s easier to perform. Emergencies are also reduced; there’s no need for sudden visits to the specialist, since there are no rubber bands that can come loose.
  • Treatment can be completed more quickly, as the force of the wire is more consistent and tooth movement occurs faster.
  • During the initial adjustment period, there is little pain; patients simply need to follow a soft diet and maintain impeccable oral hygiene.
  • Patients feel more comfortable and experience less pain or tension during treatment, thanks to reduced friction. It should also be noted that fewer sores develop, soft tissues are better protected, and the roots do not undergo resorption.
  • Dental hygiene improves significantly. The clips do not trap food particles and bacteria the way elastics do. The elastics used with traditional braces are made of polymer and have a porous texture that easily traps bacterial plaque, which—due to poor hygiene—can lead to bad breath, cavities, and even gingivitis, with the associated bleeding of the gums.
  • Tooth extractions are not necessary, as this type of orthodontic treatment allows for the creation of more space for alignment.
  • Aesthetically, it is more discreet, and this can make a difference in the patient’s confidence. Additionally, you can choose between two types: metal and porcelain.

Disadvantages of the treatment

Self-ligating orthodontics has very few drawbacks. The main one is that the total cost of treatment is slightly higher than that of conventional orthodontics. However, when you consider all the benefits it offers and the savings from fewer appointments, the cost no longer seems like a drawback.

On the other hand, not all orthodontists are certified to perform this treatment. That is why it is important to see a qualified specialist who can do the best job, ensuring successful results.

Brands of this type of orthodontic treatment

There is a wide variety of self-ligating orthodontic brands available on the market. Among the most common or well-known are the Damon System by Ormco, In-Ovation by GAC, and Smart-Clip by 3M. However, to ensure the desired results, it is essential to have a professional orthodontist and for the patient to follow proper care instructions.
