Prosthodontics is the dental specialty that aims to repair or replace damaged or lost teeth.
We will be happy to explain the pros and cons of each solution so that you have all the information you need to decide on the right treatment.
There are usually several options for treating the same case, and although we may recommend one for your specific situation, there will surely be a viable alternative if that one does not convince you for some reason.

Types of dentals
We understand dental prostheses to be all those artificial elements that we use to replace teeth.
Contenido
Nowadays, there are many types of dental prostheses available to help you regain the aesthetics and function that may have been lost with the loss of dental structure, whether within a tooth or when one, several, or all teeth have been lost.
Depending on your oral condition, we will conduct a study and diagnosis to determine which solution is best for you. We will take into account factors such as your lifestyle and budget.
Fixed prosthesis on natural tooth
The patient cannot remove it, and care is the same as for a natural tooth. We can distinguish between:
- Ceramic-metal, full ceramic, or zirconium crowns
- Ceramic veneers
- Bridges (crowns on abutment teeth and pontic crowns between them)
Removable dentures
It can be supported by natural teeth or in edentulous mouths. The patient can remove it for cleaning, as well as to brush the teeth that are still present. The types of removable prostheses are:
- Full resin dentures, for when all teeth are missing.
- Partial resin dentures, for when only some teeth are missing.
- Skeletal: composed of a thin metal frame, there are some teeth in the mouth.
These solutions are traditional ones, which, although still in use, were much more widely used before the advent of osseointegrated implants.
Today, there are cases in which implant-supported prostheses are chosen to preserve the teeth that remain in the mouth and avoid having to modify them to add the missing teeth, and also because removable prostheses are anchored to the implants and therefore do not move in the mouth.
Implant-supported prostheses
We will distinguish between two main types: fixed and removable.
Fixed implant prosthesis
The patient cannot remove it and it is cleaned like a natural tooth. There are two types:
- Ceramic-metal or zirconium crowns on implants.
- Hybrid composite prostheses screwed onto several implants.
Removable implant prostheses
This is the ideal solution when all teeth (or a large number of them) have been lost.
The patient can and should remove the prosthesis for cleaning. In this section, we highlight overdentures on implants, which can be:
- Overdentures on locator abutments
- Overdentures on ball abutments.
Price of dental prostheses
The cost of fixed prostheses is usually higher than that of removable ones, and if they are implant-supported, their cost is added to that of the prosthesis.
Fixed prostheses are more comfortable and their care is more similar to that of natural teeth.
The materials used by our prosthetic laboratories are of high quality.
At our clinic, our dentists take all the necessary measurements and precautions to carry out the work.
No two jobs are the same, so our doctors tailor each job to each patient to ensure the long-term comfort and well-being of all patients.
Splints and types
Bite splint
It is a custom-made resin mouthguard that is placed between the upper and lower teeth to prevent tooth wear caused by grinding and excessive forces.
It is also used to relax the masticatory muscles.
At one appointment, we take an impression of your upper and lower teeth to manufacture the splint, and at the next appointment, it is fitted, delivered, and maintenance instructions are provided.
Sleep apnea splint
These consist of upper and lower splints joined by a rod, which hold the jaw in a forward position relative to its usual position, thus keeping the airway clear by modifying the neck muscles when changing posture when lying down.
Very beneficial results have been obtained with patients treated with this device, often eliminating the need for cumbersome and noisy nighttime solutions that introduce pressurized air into the airway.
Its manufacture is similar to that of a bite splint: we take measurements of the upper and lower teeth, as well as a bite impression with the jaw in the forward position in which we want to keep it. At a second appointment, the splints are fitted and instructions are given on how to insert and remove them and how to maintain them.
